Gastown is a neighbourhood within Vancouver, British Columbia, which is located in the Metro Vancouver metropolitan area.

Transportation

Gastown does not demand use of a car as various other modes of transportation are available. It is especially convenient for people walking to navigate Gastown; most day-to-day errands can be run without the need to get in a vehicle, and there are also countless businesses in proximity. Gastown is also an extremely convenient part of Vancouver for bike riders. More precisely, the cycling infrastructure is very comprehensive, and a bike share station can always be found nearby. The transit network in Gastown is excellent owing to many nearby rapid transit stations on the Expo Line and Canada Line, and about 40 nearby bus lines. However, cars are a rather poor transportation option in Gastown since very little of the street infrastructure is built for cars, and it is very difficult to park.

Property owners in this area will be pleased to learn that a general and a specialty grocery store is always only a very short walk away. In addition, with over 300 restaurants and over 50 coffee shops, Gastown is a great place in which to go out to eat, for instance along Water Street. There are numerous nearby entertainment venues, there are often masses of people around, and it is very easy to find bars because they are well-distributed throughout the area. Water Street in particular offers a wide variety of nightlife. Reaching public green spaces is very easy in the neighbourhood since there are approximately 30 of them nearby for residents to unwind in.

Roughly 85% of dwellings are large apartment buildings, making it easy to find apartments in Gastown, while small apartment buildings are the main housing type in the rest of the housing stock. This part of the city offers mainly lofts and one bedroom homes. Roughly 80% of the population of this neighbourhood rent their home whereas owners make up the remainder. Around 45% of properties in this neighbourhood were built following the year 2000, while most of the remaining buildings were constructed pre-1960 and in the 1990s.
